JOIN THE STAND IN MY SHOES E-TEAM.

THE STAND IN MY SHOES PROJECT IS A SOCIAL CHANGE
MOVIE & CAMPAIGN WHICH EXPOSES THE EMPATHY DEFICIT AND ADVOCATES EMPATHY AS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL TOOLS FOR SOCIAL CHANGE IN THE 21ST CENTURY.
WE LIKE TO CALL IT A GLOBAL EMPATHY 'MOVIEMENT'.

SO, WHY THIS PROJECT & WHY NOW?

Albert Einstein once said we would not solve the problems of the world from the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.

We see the costs of our “me-first” mindset: record breakdowns in relationships, endemic corruption, environmental degradation, inequitable social structures, and a whole digital generation increasingly unable to deeply connect--to anything or anyone. These are products of what President Obama calls the ‘empathy deficit’, and its effects are far reaching.

Empathy is at the heart of human connection. It's the glue that keeps us together. And scientists have confirmed it’s in decline, with the steepest drop off occurring in the past 10 years. With it in short supply, what will become of us as a species?

We had a bold idea. What if we could make a movie to expose and erase the ‘empathy deficit’? What if we could combine that, with the power of social media to reach millions of people to restore our collective “empathy chip”? The science is in our favor: breakthrough studies have shown that human beings are fundamentally “wired to care”. The question was--and still is--will we?

And so the Stand In My Shoes Project was born.

THE STORY SO FAR...

Driving in heavy traffic on a sweltering day in Los Angeles 2011, three film-makers Anna Reeves, Vivienne Somers and Elizabeth Nakano, witnessed a young Hispanic boy hit by car. As he lay there bleeding in the street, no one stopped. We jammed on our brakes, and jumped out to help. As we did so, we noticed one man snapped a photo on his phone and walked off. The boy even refused our offer of an ambulance – "no health insurance" - he said as he clutched broken ribs. It was like he didn't expect anyone to care for him. It was this and the countless stories which expose the "empathy deficit', that we felt compelled to make a movie with a difference.

we live in a culture that discourages empathy. A culture that too often tells us our principal goal in life is to be rich, thin, young, famous, safe, and entertained. A culture where those in power too often encourage these selfish impulses.

-- BARACK OBAMA --

SO, WHAT'S THE ACTION PLAN?

Our primary goal is to erase the empathy deficit & Ignite a global empathy revolution by 2025.

Specifically, together we're going to:

- Give 10 million children empathy training via the movie and outreach activities
- Transform 10,000 corporate cultures worldwide via corporate empathy training and legislative change
- Create an empathy index as a measure of a nation's prosperity for the 2015 Global Agenda
- Make an empathic way of being a lifestyle choice for everyone

ignitINg a Global Empathy Revolution in 3 Steps

moviement
step 1

Step 1 Start the Conversation

100,000 Shoes Campaign

Launching soon, the 100,000 Shoes Campaign will be collecting "shoes as petition signatures" from citizens, changemakers, celebrities, politicians and social entrepreneurs from across the world.

We'll present them in a giant installation before President Barack Obama as part of a petition to place empathy on the global agenda. The campaign will run for 6 months and will culminate in a walk to the White House with our supporters/influencers. A portion of the shoes will be featured at as art exhibit, and the remainder, recycled.

With this campaign, our aims are:

• To generate media awareness about the importance of empathy through our strong media alliances
• To develop our empathy education programs (backed by the latest scientific research from the Science & Education Center for Empathy & Compassion)
• To harness the voices of millions of people online in support of empathy

step 2

Step 2 Spread the Message

The Movie

2013-2014: Stand In My Shoes the movie will document the rise of the Global Empathy Moviement as it unfolds in real time by following the campaigners on their journey to understand why empathy seems to be in short supply and what can be done to turn the tide.

The movie will reveal the "empathy deficit" (to borrow a phrase from a 2006 speech by Barack Obama) in schools, businesses, and politics, and will showcase the work of changemakers from across the globe who are working to increase and to celebrate the human connection.

To be filmed by an award-winning director and powered by Virgin Produced, the movie will feature the support of empathy luminaries such as Oprah; TIME's Most Influential Baby Boomer 2011 Marianne Williamson; CEO Havas Worldwide and Co-Founder One Young World David Jones; acclaimed neuroscientist Professor Bill Mobley; Ashoka leader Bill Drayton; cultural thinker and author Roman Kznaric; organizational change agent Margot Cairnes; and many more.

Stand In My Shoes is slated for release in late 2014. With distribution deals already in place with leading innovative distributors in the US, Australia, NZ, and around the world, the film is set to be a powerful springboard for igniting an empathy revolution worldwide.

step 3

Step 3 Empathy In Action

Education, Art & Research Outreach Programs

2013-2015: We've committed to developing empathy training programs tailored specifically for schools and businesses. These programs are to be informed by the latest research from the University of California's newly-formed Science & Education Center for Empathy & Compassion (SEEC), which is set to receive a portion of the film's net proceeds in support of their ongoing research.

Our expanding education partnerships indicate thus far the film will be released to a network of over 37 million children worldwide.

Other planned programs include but are not limited to the Stand In My Shoes Conversation In Art Series and other SEEC programs.

EMPATHY IS THE ENGINE THAT POWERS ALL THE BEST IN US.

-- MERYL STREEP --

SO, WHO ARE WE?

We're a group of filmmakers and concerned citizens who care about the world that we are leaving to our kids. We're just like you: looking to make sense of a world that seems to have, well, gone a little "out of whack". Now, we're using our filmmaking powers to forge a new path.

We began our journey looking for something, someone, a tool, or a technology which could help us create a more compassionate world. We were soon confronted with the realities: Did the world want to change? Was this a futile quest? Were we just a bunch of deluded idealists? Maybe. Then we discovered something cool. Empathy. This was the one thing that held societies together. Could it be the key to transforming our future? With it, it seems we thrive. Without it, we rewind and press play on World War 2.

This film is the first step toward understanding why empathy is so important to our lives - especially at this moment in history. But we can't do it on our own. We need you on our team.
